Lero is the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre. It was established in November 2005 with support from Science Foundation Ireland’s CSET (Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology) programme. It is a collaborative organisation, embracing the software engineering research activities in the University of Limerick (UL — lead partner), Dublin City University (DCU), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and University College Dublin (UCD).

Lero focuses on specific domains, especially those where reliability is crucial, including automotive, medical devices, telecommunications and financial services. Lero develops models, methods and tools that make it cheaper, faster or easier to produce this crucial software.

As software engineering is an applied science, Lero’s research agenda is informed by the requirements of its chosen industrial domains. Its researchers concentrate on problem areas that have potential real-world application and much of the research is carried out in collaboration with industry partners.
